Hear the charming Robert Portal explain why this play has become a smash hit around the world and continues to be one of the most hilarious nights out in London town.
The 39 Steps is an incredibly fast-paced romp through the story of Hitchcock's film. This pastiche is an affectionate and very funny screen to stage adaptation and contains all the iconic set pieces; the train top chase, the Forth Bridge escape and Mr Memory at the Palladium. The show is brought to life by the 4 tireless actors, playing 139 roles in 100 minutes of thrilling top notch, spiffing 1930's action. The play won an Olivier Award for Best Comedy in 2007.
Synopsis of the Plot
There have been three major film versions of the book; Hitchcock's original has been the most acclaimed and in 1999 it came 4th in a BFI poll of British films.
The story is a classic portrayal of one man's flight from wrong accusation through a series of improbable adventures as he is pursued by the authorities across the British Isles. Romance comes from him being handcuffed to a woman, who claims to be a spy, with whom he ultimately falls in love. Finally the true villains are exposed and our hero is vindicated.
